It’s a Claret and Blue Derby match of sorts…..

Aston Villa have lost their last three. They sit 15th in the Premier League table on 10 points, just 3 points above the relegation zone.

It might feel a bit early in the season, to be mentioning the ‘R’ word. But the bottom three of the Premier League table is an area best avoided at all times.

As for West Ham, they just seem to be going from strength to strength. Fourth in the Premier League table on 17 points. Into the last 8 of the Carabao (EFL) Cup, having despatched Manchester City in the last round, and also top of their Europa League group, with three wins from three.

Surely this all points to an away win?

Well, yes and no. For my free predictions for Matchweek 10, I have gone for a draw, and there is a reason for this.

Villa aren’t actually that bad at home!

So far this season, Villa’s home record reads -

  • Villa 2-0 Newcastle

  • Villa 1-1 Brentford

  • Villa 3-0 Everton

  • Villa 2-3 Wolves

Not a perfect home record, but not a bad one either. A key stat there for me is that Villa have scored in all four matches!

When you delve deeper into Villa’s stats, you will not only see that they are okay at home, but that the fixture list has been incredibly harsh on them.

In their five away matches so far, they’ve already had to visit Chelsea, Man Utd, Spurs and Arsenal (Watford was the other) - four of the more difficult away trips of the season.

As for West Ham, their away form is impressive, it reads….

  • Newcastle 2-4 West Ham

  • Southampton 0-0 West Ham

  • Leeds 1-2 West Ham

  • Everton 0-1 West Ham

10 points out of a possible 12 is very impressive. You would have to say the matches were all winnable, as is the Villa fixture today. But at the same time, West Ham haven’t had to visit the same venues like Villa have.

Anyway, on form, West Ham look the obvious bet, but as I stated, Villa’s home record isn’t too bad.
