Midweek Premier League Predictions; Spurs and Liverpool the headline selections
Liverpool can close the gap on Man City to just 1 point when they visit the Emirates to face Arsenal, can they do it?
Matchweek 29 finished with Manchester City dropping points away at Crystal Palace on Monday night.
There are three matches still to go this week though, all rescheduled from earlier in the season, when the fixture list was disrupted due to the covid pandemic.
Before we start, a quick word about the Fantasy Premier League for our readers, brought to you by Football Gambler. You can join from the link here, or just click on the image below.
It’s totally free to join, and if we can get enough members, I plan to make a cash prize available to the winner in the 2022/23 season.
The first match involves Antonio Conte's unpredictable Spurs side, who travel to the Amex to face out of form Brighton.
I mentioned Man City’s dropped points in the introduction, and that result will take on even more significance if Liverpool beat Arsenal at the Emirates tonight.
City are only 4 points ahead of Liverpool, but Klopp’s Reds have one match in hand, this match!
If Liverpool win tonight, they go just 1 point behind City on level matches played.
Liverpool play twice now before City, so the chances are that Pep’s team won't be top of the Premier League the next time they kick off.
A prospect that was unthinkable just a few weeks ago!
Brighton v Spurs - Wednesday 7.30pm
Brighton have had an absolutely horrific run of fixtures and form, and have lost their last five. Depending on results, Newcastle could go above the Seagulls in the league this week.
On Saturday they lost 2-0 at home to Liverpool, in what wasn't their worst performance of the season. But at the same time, Graham Potter's team never looked like winning.
Spurs have won three and lost two of their last five. They seem very hit and miss at the moment.
On Saturday they gave the inconsistent Manchester United a run for their money, but we're ultimately undone by the sheer brilliance of Ronaldo.
Prior to the 3-2 defeat to Man Utd, or should I say Ronaldo, Spurs had beaten Everton 5-0, and Leeds 4-0.
There is a 1-0 defeat away to Burnley, and a 3-2 win away to Man City at the Etihad included in that run. Showing just how hard Spurs are to predict.
It has to be a win for Spurs tonight though, surely!
Verdict - SPURS WIN
Arsenal v Liverpool - Wednesday 8.15pm
A huge match for both teams at the Emirates Stadium tonight. With Man Utd beating Spurs last Saturday, Arsenal could do with the points in the battle for 4th place.
While with Man City dropping points on Monday, a win puts Klopp's Reds just 1 point behind City!
We're used to the same old Arsenal, beating the Brighton's and Leicester's of this world, and then falling short against the top two or three teams in the country.
So is this young ever improving Arsenal team any different?
Against Man City on New Year’s Day, this Arsenal team looked like they were different, and should have beaten the reigning champions.
They didn't though, and the Gunners manged to lose a game they should have won courtesy of a 93rd minute goal by Rodri.
As for Liverpool, they've won their last eight Premier League matches in a row. And if they want to beat Manchester City to the title, they're going to have to keep on winning.
It will be interesting to see if Arsenal can push Liverpool close. But on current form, I have to go for another Liverpool win.
Verdict - LIVERPOOL WIN
Everton v Newcastle - Thursday 7.45pm
These two ships passed in the night a few matches ago now, and one is flying up the table, while the other is sinking fast.
Everton are awful away, and their best chance of survival looks to be their home form, but that let them down again against Wolves on Sunday.
As for Newcastle, they also played on Sunday, and can consider themselves extremely unlucky to leave Stamford Bridge empty handed.
Even though Newcastle’s run ended in the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea, I think they can take plenty of positives from the loss, and it shouldn't affect them negatively.
For Everton, it's hard to find any positives to take from the Wolves match.
I can only go on form here and what I see when these two teams play. I have to go for a Newcastle win.
Verdict - NEWCASTLE WIN
