Premier League Predictions: Matchweek 14 Wednesday Matches
A further 6 matches take place tonight with the 239th Merseyside Derby the stand-out fixture.
The big match tonight is the 239th Merseyside Derby and I think it’s fair to say it’s a huge match for Rafa Benitez.
A combination of a red card and at Newcastle, and couple of cracking misses from Christian Benteke with a stupid handball at Leeds ensured that this week’s tips didn’t get off to the greatest of starts.
So without dwelling too much on those results, let’s have a look at tonight’s match-ups.
Southampton vs Leicester Match Prediction
Wednesday 7.30pm
Have the Foxes finally turned the corner this season? There was a false dawn after successive wins over Brentford and Man Utd earlier this season - which was followed by another blip.
One win hardly constitutes a revival, but the fact that both Vardy and Maddison looked in good form bodes well for Brendon Rodgers’ team.
As for the Saints, they’ve now lost back-to-back matches. The defeat to Liverpool last week was expected, the 2-1 loss to Norwich the weak before should be alarming for fans.
Verdict - LEICESTER WIN
Watford vs Chelsea Match Prediction
Wednesday 7.30pm
Right, well, Watford in my view aren’t great. In their last 8 matches they have drawn won twice, drawn once, and lost five.
The two wins, Everton 5-2 and Man Utd 4-1. The draw, 1-1 at home to Newcastle.
The defeats, 4-2 away at Leicester, 1-0 away at Arsenal, 1-0 at home to Southampton (should have been about 8-0), 5-0 at home to Liverpool, 1-0 away to Leeds.
Not a great run of results, and if you’re looking for the freak ones, I think they came against Everton and Norwich.
Verdict - CHELSEA WIN
West Ham vs Brighton Match Prediction
Wednesday 7.30pm
The Hammers all of a sudden have lost their last two. Despite this, they still sit fourth in the table, albeit on goal difference.
The defeats have come at the hands of Wolves (away 1-0), and Man City (2-1).
As for Brighton, I felt they were very unlucky away at Aston Villa, and on another day would have also beaten Leeds (their last two matches).
Finishing seems to be the problem for Graham Potter’s men, and once they sort that out, they will be fine.
I don’t see that change in fortune happening tonight though.
Verdict - WEST HAM WIN
Wolves vs Burnley Match Prediction
Wednesday 7.30pm
By most accounts, Wolves were lucky to leave Carrow Road with a point on Saturday.
They have been on an exceptional run of form lately though. They’ve won six of their last ten, only tasting defeat twice in that period.
Opponents Burnley have picked up a bit of form lately as well. The Clarets are unbeaten in four, with three draws and a win in that sequence of results.
They did though drop beneath Norwich in the table last night, which should serve as a timely reminder that they are in a lot of trouble this season.
In fairness, Sean Dyche’s side do have two games in hand on the Canaries!
Onto tonight, and I wouldn’t be massively surprised if Burnley upset the home side, but I have to go with a win for Wolves.
Verdict - WOLVES WIN
Villa vs Man City Match Prediction
Wednesday 8.15pm
People will no doubt be raving about Villa’s upturn in form under Steven Gerrard, and I can understand that.
But a sense of reality is required here. Villa conceded a hell of a lot of possession in those two wins over Brighton and Crystal Palace.
Against the Seagulls, Villa had just 37% of the ball. And against Palace it was just 36%.
Do that against a side like City, and I’m sure there will only be one outcome.
Verdict - MAN CITY WIN
Everton vs Liverpool Match Prediction
Wednesday 8.15pm
Finally, is this redemption night for Rafa Benitez? Or will this be the day the Everton fans really turn on him.
Everton have been on a stinking run lately, and last Sunday’s defeat at Brentford is the sort of loss that can really see fans turn.
The last thing Benitez now needs is a huge loss at the hands of his local rivals, and former club.
At least he has a chance tonight. Everton are at home, their will be a full house roaring his team on, so this is his team’s chance to put a win on the board.
On the flip side, if Everton surrender meekly to the Reds and get steamrolled, things could get ugly for Rafa.
Unfortunately for Rafa, I think that Liverpool are just way too good at the moment, and I can only see Klopp’s team winning again.
Verdict - LIVERPOOL WIN
